Director pensions: salary sacrifice without starving the business
Limited company directors often hear that pension contributions are “efficient.” Efficiency only helps if the company can spare the cash after wages, supplier terms, and tax liabilities. A contribution that empties the operating buffer creates stress that no tax saving repairs.
Model three contribution levels against your next twelve months of expected receipts. Include VAT quarters and corporation tax instalments. Only then decide whether a one-off company contribution or a monthly standing order fits better.
Salary sacrifice arrangements need clear paperwork and payroll cooperation. Your accountant should confirm the National Insurance position before anything is signed. An adviser coordinates the personal retirement goal; the accountant confirms the company can legally and practically pay.
Avoid treating the annual allowance as a target. Some years the business should retain profit for equipment or hiring. A lower contribution with a healthy company is usually preferable to a maximum contribution followed by a director loan to cover shortfalls.
